How to Edit and Customize Your Wix Menu (Step-by-Step Guide)

You’ve built a beautiful Wix website — but if your main menu feels confusing, cluttered, or just not quite right, you’re not alone.

Your menu is how visitors move through your site, so getting it right matters. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Wix menus, including how to:

  • Add and remove menu items

  • Rearrange pages

  • Create dropdown menus

  • Fix common submenu layout issues

  • Customize menu design

  • Edit your mobile (hamburger) menu

  • Decide between a basic menu vs. an advanced menu

This tutorial focuses on the Wix Classic Editor, but many of the concepts still apply across Wix products.

Accessing the Menus & Pages Panel in Wix

Most Wix templates come with a menu already installed — usually a horizontal menu in the site header. This menu is directly connected to your Menus & Pages panel on the left side of the editor.

To open it:

  1. Go to the left toolbar

  2. Click Menus & Pages

Pages that appear in your menu are not grayed out. Pages that are hidden will show a hidden icon next to them.

This panel controls what shows (or doesn’t show) in your site’s navigation.

How to Add, Remove, and Reorder Menu Items

Show or Hide Pages from the Menu

To remove a page from your menu (without deleting it):

  1. Hover over the page name in Menus & Pages

  2. Click the three dots (ellipsis)

  3. Select Hide from menu

To add it back, click the ellipsis again and choose Show.

This is helpful if you want pages like thank-you pages or internal resources that visitors don’t need in the main navigation.

Reorder Menu Items

Reordering your menu is simple:

  • Click and drag a page

  • Drop it into the desired position

The order in your Menus & Pages panel is exactly how it will appear on your live site.

Creating Subpages & Dropdown Menus

Sometimes you want menu items grouped together — like a Resources or Services dropdown.

How to Create a Dropdown Menu

  1. Click Add Menu Item

  2. Choose Dropdown

  3. Rename it (for example: “Resources”)

This creates a menu item that acts like a folder — visitors can hover over it, but it doesn’t link to a page itself.

To add pages to the dropdown:

  • Make sure the page is visible

  • Click and drag it under the dropdown item

  • You’ll see a bracket indicating it’s nested

Now when visitors hover over that menu item, they’ll see the dropdown options.

Fixing Dropdown Menu Layout Issues

A common problem:Your dropdown exists… but it appears way off to the side.

This usually comes down to menu layout settings, not design.

How to Fix It

  1. Click your menu

  2. Go to Layout

  3. Open the Dropdown settings

If your dropdown is set to Columns, items may appear far away.Switch it to Flyout to keep dropdown items directly beneath the parent menu item.

You can also adjust:

  • Dropdown alignment (center, left, right)

  • Spacing and behavior

These settings are easy to miss — but they make a big difference.

Customizing the Design of Your Wix Menu

To change how your menu looks (fonts, colors, hover effects):

  1. Click the menu

  2. Click the paintbrush icon

  3. Select Customize Design

Menu Item Styling Options

You can customize:

  • Fonts and font weight

  • Text size

  • Colors

  • Hover effects (underline, color change, etc.)

  • Active page styling (how the current page appears)

These settings help visitors understand where they are on your site — subtle, but important.

Editing the Wix Mobile Menu (Hamburger Menu)

On mobile, Wix automatically converts your menu into a hamburger menu to save space.

Can’t Find Your Mobile Menu?

If your menu icon is missing:

  • It may be hidden

  • Or positioned off the page

To find it:

  1. Go to Mobile View

  2. Open Layers

  3. Look for warnings or hidden elements

This is the fastest way to troubleshoot mobile menu issues.

Customizing the Mobile Menu

Once selected, you can:

  • Adjust layout and alignment

  • Change spacing

  • Customize design just like desktop

Even though desktop and mobile menus are connected, their layouts are edited separately, so it’s worth checking both.

Basic Menu vs. Advanced Menu: Which Should You Use?

Basic (Classic) Menu

  • Automatically pulls from Menus & Pages

  • Best for most websites

  • Easy to manage and update

Advanced Menu

  • Allows completely custom navigation

  • Not synced with your site’s page structure

  • Useful for:

    • External links

    • Documents

    • Custom navigation experiences

To enable it:

  1. Click your menu

  2. Click Settings

  3. Select Set as Advanced

⚠️ Important:Once you switch to an advanced menu, you’ll need to manage desktop and mobile menus separately.
